KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Fall is officially here. And if you suffer from allergies that cause you to sneeze, cough or just feel miserable — you likely will soon.
Kansas City ranks 38th out of the top 100 cities on the 2013 Fall Allergy Capitals Report. It’s an annual report released by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of American that ranks the most challenging cities to live in if you have allergies.
FOX 4 News reported last week that the number one city for allergies was Wichita, Kansas.
So what can we do to make allergy season as tolerable as possible? Dr. Chuck Siegel, an allergist with Allergy and Asthma Specialists of Kansas City, appeared on Tuesday’s FOX 4 Morning Show to talk about how you can survive fall allergies.
Dr. Siegel made these suggestions:
- Keep outdoor allergens out of the house. Take your shoes off when entering your home and wash your hair every night before bed.
- Keep allergens out of your car. When using the air conditioning, use the recirculated air funtion to ensure that you are not continually bringing allergens into the car.
- If you are outdoors for a long period of time, weat a hat to cover your hair and close fitting sunglasses to protect your eyes.
- Avoid using highly scented soapes, perfumes, lotions, hair spray and scented candles as irritating odors and fumes can further irritate the lining of your nose and eyes that’s already inflamed by an allergic reaction.
- Don’t suffer from your allergies. There are good medications to control all of the symptoms of nasal and eye allergies.
- Don’t confuse your symptoms with a cold or the flu, particularly in the fall.
