KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Many people around the country are startling themselves with frigid water to raise money for Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease.
FOX 4’s Matt Stewart stepped up for The Ice Bucket Challenge for personal reasons. The mother of a good friend of his was diagnosed with ALS in 1984. She has been confined to a wheelchair for most of her life and is still alive today.
Since the bucket challenge began, ALS has seen a double in its donations.
“It’s pretty funny. I mean when you see celebrities and superstar athletes dumping an ice bucket over their head for ALS, it just means we made it in a way,” said Pat Quinn, a man with ALS who started the bucket campaign.
The 30-year-old was diagnosed with the neurological disease last year and has started a foundation to raise awareness and money for ALS. It’s called Quinn for the Win.
The Independence Missouri Police Department also took the ice bucket challenge. See their video below.
Famous people who have taken the challenge such as Jimmy Fallon, Justin Timberlake, Andy Reid, members of the Kansas City Chiefs, and Sporting KC.
