LENEXA, Kan. — A ten-year-old Lenexa girl received an award from MED-ACT paramedics at a special assembly just for her Monday morning at her school.
Yesenia Diosdado, a fourth-grader at Rising Star Elementary School, 8600 Candlelight Lane, was honored and thanked for what she did on January 14 when she saw a woman hurt in a car accident near her home.
“She looked really hurt. Her face was bleeding and I didn’t want her to die or something. She was really hurt,” she recalled.
The woman, she noticed, was deaf and having a hard to communicating with first responders on the scene. Diosdado crossed the busy intersection near 77th and Quivira to help.
“She said, ‘I sign. Can I help?’ And I was floored. I didn’t know what to say initially because this doesn’t really happen at all,” said Chris Winger, EMS Captain .
Although it was a minor car accident, Diosdado’s help sped up the process of getting proper care to the driver.
Her mother, Susan Mulidore, used to be an interpreter and taught all her children this skill.
Diosdado was actually nervous to tell her mom about what happened that day.
“Okay, what am I going to get mad about,” Mulidore remembers asking her daughter, who replied, “Mom I crossed the street.”
Diosdado was given a certificate and coin for bravery at the assembly and received an impressive round of applause.
