KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A chemical explosion blew the window out of a home Saturday night, which sent three police officers to the hospital. The officers were exposed to the chemical that was being created inside the home.
The explosion happened in the 2900 block of Olive St. Witnesses said the three officers were taken away in an ambulance. Investigators say they are all doing okay and on Sunday the police department confirmed that they were released from the hospital.
Neighbors heard an explosion and ran outside to see smoke coming out of the home and called 911.
Witnesses said three officers ran inside then minutes later ran back out. Witnesses also said several children were inside the home and ran out too.
Meth lab specialists were also called on scene to assist.
A man that lived in the home was injured and treated for smoke inhalation.
Police aren’t releasing specifics about what chemical exploded but witnesses say they know what it was.
“From what I understand we were told it was like a junior, the guy made a joke about it and said it was like a junior chemistry set. So basically I guess they were cooking. (Cooking drugs?) Yeah. That’s what we were told by one of the officers,” Witness Asia McClain said.
The scene was cleaned up by late Saturday and the family is back inside the home. Police said the three officers were expected to be released from the hospital Saturday night.
