4 killed when car, school bus collide in Louisiana

(CNN) — Four people died when their car collided at noon Saturday with a school bus in Centerville, Louisiana, police said.

A fifth person in the car was taken to a hospital with severe injuries, said Stephen Hammons, a public information officer with Louisiana State Police.

A number of students on the Lafayette Parish bus suffered minor injuries, he said.

The injuries included 13 students and a coach, all of them from Lafayette High School. The bus was en route to a practice baseball game at Berwick High School, CNN affiliate KATC reported, citing transportation director Damon Evans.

“A lot of the players, including myself, have bloodied faces and broken noses,” Lafayette senior Drew Colowich told the TV station.

A tire blew out on the car, causing it to cross the center line and crash head-on into the bus, school officials were told, according to KATC.
