625 pound man says he is unfit for court, holds up unresolved 2-year-old crime

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.  — One man is blaming his weight and health complications for keeping a two-year-old crime unresolved.

FOX 4’s sister station, FOX 17 in West Michigan, reported Jeffery Klein, who weighs 625 pounds, has missed a number of court appearances because of his health. At his weight he says he cannot function without pain killers and oxygen tanks.

Klein said his legal trouble began two years ago with what he said was a “stupid decision.” He said he made a bomb threat because of fines which were issued to him for littering and other offenses.

“I was upset,” he told FOX 17. “I admitted to police that I did a bomb threat over the phone at the Cedar Springs Mobile Home Estates.”

Court officials are growing impatient since Klein has repeatedly missed status conferences on his bomb threat case. And although Klein says he has documentation which says he is wheelchair or bed bound, prosecutors are saying he can get around with assistance and therefore he should be able to make it into court.

Klein said a warrant for his arrest was issued for his failure to appear in court back in November, and as a result may stop his SSI disability from coming in.

Klein, who said he just wants to get past this, plans on paying for his mistakes and encouraged others to learn from the errors of his ways. He said has never tried to hide from police or evade an arrest, he’s just not sure if the jail or prison would be equipped to handle him.

Klein said his lawyer told him his bomb threat case may come to a conclusion by Friday.
