8-Year-Old Breaks Up Theft Ring

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — An eight-year-old Tennessee boy is being credited with busting up a multi-state theft ring. A burglar broke into his family’s home and took their belongings.

That inspired Landon Crabtree to take matters into his own hands.

“I lost my Playstation, most of my games for it, my iPad,” Crabtree said.

Insurance money helped the family replace their stolen items. Once that happened, Crabtree decided to use one of his favorite apps in an attempt to track down what the family lost.

“He was upstairs. He came down and he’s like, ‘Dad, I know where our iPad is,”‘ said Richard Crabtree.  “And I’m like, ‘What are you talking about?'”

Find My iPhone was the app Landon used. It syncs to your iTunes and uses GPS. If a device has iTunes, say an iPhone or an iPad, the app tracks its location. A blinking dot on the map showed Landon exactly where their iPad was.

After investigation, police not only found their iPad but several others — and much more only a few miles away from the Crabtree home.

“I was in total shock, I mean just amazed,” Richard Crabtree said.

Police arrested John Docherty and he now faces burglary charges.

The young detective said he’d heard others say the app worked and he wanted to try it for himself.
