Avoid Some of These Germy Places

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – According to the C.D.C., during the first week of January, both Kansas and Missouri were reporting “widespread” flu activity.

Kansas City Health Department experts say the flu started early this year, and it’s worse than what we’ve seen in previous years, which have been relatively mild.

We all know the flu is spread from person to person, but the C.D.C. says the most common way of illnesses spreading is from saliva droplets spread by someone who’s infected coughing, sneezing, or talking.

“The flu virus is coming out of their mouth and somebody else walking by breathing it or getting it in their eyes,” said Jeff Hershberger, from the Kansas City, Mo. Health Department.

The flu virus or other diseases can be passed through touching objects with germs on them.

Some experts say you’ll find a lot of germs on remote controls, light switches, keyboards, refrigerator handle, microwave, the bottom of a purse, public mail boxes, atms, and even gas pumps.

Besides getting a flu shot, there’s a simple remedy to avoid getting sick.

“Handwashing prevents so many illnesses,” Hershberger said.

Health experts say when you do wash your hands rub your hands together for about twenty-seconds, and make sure to get into all the crevices.
