Baby dies from injuries sustained in television fall

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — An 8-month-old boy succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday, one day after a television fell on him.

Police were called to a home in the 6700 block of South Benton in Kansas City, Mo., on Tuesday after someone reported the incident. The child was transported to Children’s Mercy Hospital in critical condition. He later died.

Sgt. Karri Thompson said two men, 25 and 30 years old, and a 45-year-old woman were inside the home at the time.

FOX 4’s Robert Townsend spoke to a man who said he was asleep inside the home when the TV fell on the child. He said he does not live in the home. He said the 45-year-old woman was babysitting the infant when the TV accidentally fell off the stand.

Police took the woman’s son in to question him about the incident.

Two Jackson County Division of Family Services were at the house on Wednesday to talk to the babysitter.

“He was very distraught. He came over here yelling like, ‘Oh! Call the police!’ Looked like he had his hands up, ‘Oh please, it’s for a child!” remembered Arthur Williams, who was working on remodeling a house next door at the time.

“Very heartbreaking,” said Williams. “I prayed for them last night.”

As of Wednesday evening, no one had been arrested or charged in connection with the baby’s death.
