Boston bombing suspect formally charged

BOSTON — The surviving suspect in the Boston Marathon bombings is scheduled to attend a probable cause hearing on May 30 at 10 a.m. ET, a federal court document shows.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19, was charged Monday with the use of a weapon of mass destruction and malicious destruction of property resulting in death. He could face the death penalty if convicted.

Tsarnaev, who is being treated for injuries at a Boston hospital, made his first appearance before a federal judge — in his hospital room — on Monday, the Justice Department said. The court document noted that he is alert and able to respond to the charges.
