Cash-Strapped “The Jo” Faces Route Cuts

OLATHE, Kan. — Steep budget cuts could mean some big changes for Johnson County’s bus system, as at least 10 of the system’s two dozen routes could face elimination.

According to a report in the Kansas City Star, after years of expansion, a major budget shortfall could lead to drastic service reductions for The Jo.

The Jo’s fiscal year 2013 $12 million budget is down $1.5 million from fiscal year 2012, and includes cuts in federal, state and county support.

Under new plans, only five of The Jo’s nearly two dozen routes would survive, while another five – including a popular route to Lawrence – would survive “if possible.” Another 10 routes are slated for elimination entirely.

The Jo’s two services for elderly and disabled riders – Special Edition and SWIFT – would remain intact, the Star reports.
