City Union Mission’s services in high demand due to winter weather

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — With snow and below freezing temperatures, homeless shelters are busier now than they have been in a while. Some have been suffering from lack of staff because it has been difficult for them to get to work, and they are also suffering from lack of supplies. The City Union Mission can house 300 men overnight, and they have been taking in about 340 to 350 during this cold snap.

Executive Director/CEO Dan Doty said that the extra capacity has challenged the mission’s food supplies.

“We were running out of breakfast cereal, cold cereal yesterday and oatmeal, but I think that’s a temporary thing. I think there’s just always a need especially for canned protein, meats, canned fruit canned vegetables, things like that,” Doty said.

The mission relies on donations as it does not receive government support. Doty knows that the weather also makes it difficult for charitable people to bring donations to the mission’s doorstep.

“A lot of people can’t necessarily get out and buy things for the mission, but on the website they can give online and we can often buy things less expensively than others can, so getting donations is helpful as well,” Doty said.
