Court Documents Show Children Home in Double Murder

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Around 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, court documents say Marvin Rice’s ex lover and her boyfriend were found shot to death  in their Dent County home.

Court documents show Rice and his ex-lover, 32-year-old Annette Durham were having custody issues over their two-year-old son. Durham’s six year-old daughter and the two year-old were  at the house when Annette Durham and 39-year-old Steven Strotkamp were killed.  The six-year-old ran to a neighbor’s home to get help.

The little girl said she saw Rice kill her mother, and then grab his son and take him out of the  house.  The boy was later found with Rice’s new wife, unharmed.

Later, a cell phone signal showed Rice was on his way north on U.S. 63 toward Jefferson City.  In Jefferson City, spike strips disabled Rice’s car, and he ran into the Capitol Plaza Hotel.   Court documents from Cole County show rice fired at officers and one officer fired back.

“There was a Christmas party with approximately 600 people occurring in the motel,” says Missouri State Highway Patrol Sgt. Paul Reisch.

“Anywhere from 15-20 shots is what we heard ring out out,” says Jason Karbarski, a Granite City, Ill. man who was there with his family.

“I thought somebody was going room to room, just randomly shooting. I mean, I was very terrified.  The kids were crying,” explains Rachel Karbarski.

Police shot Rice.  He’s hospitalized in fair condition.  He faces two charges of first degree murder in Dent County and one felony count of assault on a law enforcement officer and one felony count of armed criminal action in Cole County.
