Customers upset when KC service shop closes without returning equipment

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Young’s KC Mower Center has been open for nearly 50 years, but recently closed up and cleared out, and customers say the owners left without returning equipment.

Dust has piled up on the doors and windows; the building is empty. There’s not even a sign that shows the name of this business.

“I went to the back of the building which is its service shop, there’s no equipment. I knew they were gone. That’s why I started pressing this a little harder,” said Reid Teaney.

Teaney has been a customer of Young’s KC Mower Center for nearly 40 years. The business sells and services Toro lawncare equipment. With the changing seasons, he dropped his snow blower off for a tune-up but never got it back.

“People go out of business all the time. I’m not terribly happy about the way I’ve been treated,” he said.

There’s only a sign, simply reading “closed for renovation,” but any identifying markers and equipment are gone. From the outside, it looks like a vacant building.

“It would’ve been fine if they had called me, written me a note, or emailed that said we are going out of business and you have equipment here, we’d like you to pick it up. That would’ve been just fine. But instead they vanished into thin air,” he said.

A property report shows Charles and Patricia Young as owners of the building and business. But FOX 4 wasn’t able to reach them by email or phone. Teaney said he’s tried countless times, even stopping by the store and leaving notes.

“I have not been there this out there this afternoon. I don’t see the need to go that direction. I’ve wasted enough time,” he said.
