OLATHE, Kan. — A big movie premiere took over the AMC Theater in Olathe Monday.
The stars of the film showed up dressed to the nines and riding in a limo. This movie’s premiere was different from anything you’ll see in Hollywood.
For one thing, it featured kids only from the Kansas City area. This was the Just Like You: Autism film premiere.
Just Like You Films has created four other films to bring awareness to issues like Down Syndrome, cancer, and burn victims. The films feature local kids who are friends with someone who’s going through one of these life experiences, and tonight, autism was the subject at the forefront.
Three pairs of friends were on the film and at the premiere representing different aspects of the Autism Spectrum- all to kick off what will be months of educating people around the world about Autism and telling audiences that people with Autism are just like you.
“To understand everyone for their differences,” said Jennifer Smith, Executive Director for the Autism Society of the Heartland.
“We truly believe that movies are weapons of mass connection, there’s no more powerful way to connect people than through film, taking a walk in their shoes,” said Jen Greenstreet, creator of Just Like You: Autism.
At Monday’s premiere, there were more than five-hundred people. Now the film is headed to the Golden Door Festival, sponsored in part by Tommy Hilfiger.
