When Taylor Swift came out in her homely-looking dress sporting straight hair in a side braid at the Grammys I thought, “Oh dear, what is she thinking?!”
Taylor has said she wrote the song “Mean” after a critic (rumored to be music industry gadfly Bob Lefsetz) ridiculed her talent — saying she has none.
Taylor confessed the words hurt. But, luckily, she is pretty good at stringing words together herself.
But that outfit at the Grammys! I was concerned. What would her critics say now?

But then…. oh, but then, she descended the stairs followed by a posse of other homely-looking performers and changed the lyrics to her song, “Mean.”
Clapping her hands above her head, with a twinkle in her eye she sang: But some day I’ll be singing inside the Grammys and all you’re ever going to be is mean.
The crowd went wild. So wild, in fact, they gave her a standing ovation.
Of course, Taylor’s homely outfit and banjo-playing performance in and of itself was a statement — one that took courage in the midst of dolled-up celebrities in their swanky attire. In her drab dress and homely-looking hair, Taylor sparkled.
We can all sparkle in the wake of our harshest critics. We just have to rise above and not believe the lies that spew from their filthy mouths.
Life’s short. I propose we embrace one another, seeking peace and harmony rather than trying to create discord amongst ourselves.
And while most of us will never sing inside the Grammy’s, we all have a stage where our voice is heard. So belt it out — just don’t be mean when you’re at the mic.
