INDEPENDENCE, Mo. — Police are still searching for answers in the investigation into 22-year old Corey Laykovich’s late July murder.
He passed away after being stabbed several times while walking in his Independence neighborhood. So far, no arrests have been made.
Laykovich’s friends and family refuse to give up knowing his attacker is still on the loose.
“The hardest part for our family is knowing this person is still out there and there are other young people who could also get hurt, who go out at that time of night, that live in this neighborhood,” said Laykovich’s mother, Michelle Metje.
As of now, no one has come forward with information pointing to Laykovich’s attacker or with details about what exactly happened. On Saturday, Corey’s friends and family took the time to ask neighbors face-to-face. They went door-to-door with flyers in the area of Crackerneck Road and 39th Street where they believe Laykovich took some of his last steps.
“We’re hoping one person might remember something and maybe at the time they didn’t realize it actually ended with him being nmurdered,” said Metje.
“It’s very hard seeing her go through this and we feel that someone out here knows something. So we’re going to do everything we can to get the word out,” said friend Ginger Hensley.
Metje said she won’t stop the investigation until someone speaks up.
“It still keeps me up at night and I still have my moments,” she said.
The reward for information leading to Laykovich’s killer is up to $6,000. The TIPS Hotline has donated $1,000 and another $5,000 is from donations friends and family have raised.
