INDEPENDENCE, Mo. — A man and a young girl were hit by gunfire Sunday night as they drove down I-70 in Independence.
They were driving westbound on the interstate at about 6:30 p.m. when someone shot at their car, striking both of them. The man, who is the boyfriend of the girl’s mother, pulled off the highway and drove to a near-by QuikTrip on Noland Road to call 911.
The two victims reportedly have non-life threatening injuries and were listed in stable condition.
Police are looking for a 1990s gold Mercury.
They shut down westbound lanes of I-70 between 291 Highway and Noland Road so officers could walk the interstate to look for evidence.
“We don’t know if it’s a road rage issue or what it is exactly at all. We are trying to get the chance to speak with the driver and find out what information we can,” said Tom Gentry with the Independence Police Department.
If you have any information in this case, you are asked to call the Independence Police Department at (816) 325-7300.
“Putting pieces together can be quite difficult at times so we’re working through that now,” Gentry said. “Hopefully we’ll get some answers a little bit later on.”
