Father and son go door-to-door giving widows uplifting Valentine’s Day surprise

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Some metro women thought they might have to spend Valentine’s Day alone, but found a heartwarming surprise when they opened the door on Saturday.

Whether it’s a nice dinner, flowers or a simple “I love you,” Valentine’s Day is all about spreading the love. But for many, Saturday’s holiday can be a painful reminder of a love lost and for that volunteers hit the streets, and knocked on their door right when they needed it most.

This father/son duo isn’t spending their Valentine’s Day like many Kansas City families. Instead they’re helping to hand out hundreds of single red roses to a few lucky ladies.

These women all have something in common. They all feel a certain heaviness on this holiday, because they’ve all lost their husbands. Women like Anne Lledurant. Her husband died four years ago and this morning she woke up, heavy hearted.

“What I miss most about him is the companionship. We were not only married, he was my best friend,” she said.

Lledurant lost her companion but she’s not alone and that is the message Jimmy Chouteau aims to spread today.

“Our heart is just to try to connect with them and let them know they’re not alone and that people care about them,” said Chouteau.

He and his wife started a group called Widow Wednesday, where once a week he helps widows with handy work around the house but this year he decided to push it a step further.

“It makes me feel great. It makes me feel very fortunate. I feel very blessed,” Lledurant said.

A single red rose, a short conversation and a simple hello: all small gestures, making a huge impact.

“We just want to let you know you’re not alone,” Chouteau said.

“That somebody really and truly cares about me. I’m a very, very lucky woman,” said Lledurant.
