Father says son’s heroic actions during apartment fire made him proud

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A Kansas City dad celebrated Father’s Day with a son he says saved lives from a burning building.

Shortly after nine Saturday night, an apartment complex located in the 600 block of Olive broke out into smoke and flames. Teenager, Michael Nelson, who lives across the street, says he dropped everything, ran from his basement across the way, and started banging on doors.

“I had two kids over my shoulders and then one kid in my hand,” he recalled.

Michael says he grabbed a grandmother and her grandbabies, running in and out at least four times.

As he and his father, William Nelson, prepared food for the teen`s graduation party on Sunday, William says he couldn`t be more proud of his son’s courage, and the young man he`s become.

“He`s shown that he`s grown up. He`s learned a lot. He did a good deed yesterday. A lot of them over there, they needed his help,” said William Nelson, Michael’s father.

Firefighters say no one was hurt. But, families from six apartments were forced to find somewhere else to live as a result of the fire.
