GREEN RIVER, Utah – A set of rock formations known as “goblins” that had previously only taken a beating from Mother Nature for 200 million years had a trio of devious men performing their own acts of erosion; and on tape to boot.
The Salt Lake Tribune reports that the group of Boy Scout leaders may face felony charges after filming one of the members knocking over one of the “goblins” at Goblin Valley State Park. Glenn Taylor told the newspaper that he was the man who pushed the rock over, his friend Dave Hall filmed while Dylan Taylor was an onlooker.
One of the men can be heard saying, “Wiggle it, just a little bit,” right before one of the others knocks over a gargantuan rock. They all howl in laughter on the video but Utah State Parks officials don’t find any humor in the act at all.
“This is highly, highly inappropriate. This is not what you do at state parks. It’s disturbing and upsetting,” parks spokesman Eugene Swalberg said to the newspaper.
Swalberg also said that consequences were impending from an investigation that is ongoing. A county attorney said that while he’s aware of the incident, nothing has been presented to his office for charges yet.
Park officials told the newspaper that the rock formation was created in the Jurassic period. Taylor said he thought he was doing a civic service in the interest of public safety but regrets the action in retrospect.
