KANSAS CITY, Mo. — No one can tell you more about the number one NFL draft pick and the Kansas City Chief’s newest player Eric Fisher’s work ethic than his mother.
“I raised Eric to know that nothing in life is free and if you really want something and something of substance you need to work for it,” said Heidi Langegger.
Even before becoming a star offensive tackle at Central Michigan, Fisher’s mother says his determination to succeed was evident.
“We have neighbors down the road with 22 acres,” said Langegger. “They’re in their 90s so that’s who he worked for all through high school. He saved his money and bought a pick up truck.”
Fisher refuses to takes all the credit for his success. Langegger maintained a full-time job as a single mother.
“I’ve watched my mom go to work my whole life. She gets up, goes to work and comes home,” he said.
That, however, is about to change. Fisher had a big surprise for his mom after the Senior Bowl game in January.
“Eric sat me down and we were having some pizza and he said, ‘Mom you know this is going to become a reality,’ and I said, ‘I know,’, and he said, ‘I want you to retire. You’ve worked long enough, you’ve worked hard enough, you’ve always been there for me and now I want to be there for you,” quoted Langegger.
She’s taking her son up on his offer. She’s retiring at the end of June
Fisher is the first Mid-American Conference player in history to be selected as the overall number one draft pick.
