Golfer falls into 18-foot sinkhole near St. Louis

WATERLOO, Ill. (KTVI) – After a 20-foot sinkhole opened up under a Florida man’s home on March 1, killing him, an Illinois man had his own encounter with the geological  phenomenon.

Last week while walking on the Annbriar Golf Course, the ground suddenly gave way causing Mark Mihal to fall in and become trapped, FOX 2 Now reports.

“First step right on it I was gone,” he said of the 14th hole. Mihal dislocated his shoulder in the fall. “The second I fell I thought about the guy in Florida.”

The general manager of the golf course and Mihal’s friends pulled him out using a ladder and a rope. Pictures of his rescue were posted on GolfManna.com, a golf website he operates.

According to FOX 2 Now, sinkholes are more common in the St. Louis than other parts of the U.S. because of the soil composition.
