Graco car seats now the largest seat recall in American history

DETROIT — Nearly two million infant car seats are being recalled because of a faulty buckle that makes the car seats difficult to open. Graco Children’s Products is recalling 1.9 million infant car seats, agreeing to government demands in what is now the largest seat recall in American history.

Among the products recalled are select infant, toddler convertible car seats and harnessed booster seats.

The recall came after a five-month spat between Graco and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Earlier this year the company recalled 4.2 million toddler seats for a harness buckle problem. But it resisted the agency’s demand to recall the infant seats.

Graco stressed there have been no reported injuries. The company will offer free replacement buckles to any owner who has the seat. Consumers can determine if their infant and toddler car seats are affected and order a replacement harness buckle using the online order form. While waiting for a replacement kit, it is safe to use the infant and toddler car seat, Graco said.
