H&R Block Customers Warned of Tax Season Text Scam

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Just as tax season is getting underway, scammers posing as H&R Block Inc. representatives are trying to gain access to customer’s personal information using text messages.

Victims have reported text messages that detail a problem with their Emerald Card, a debit card through H&R Block that allows customers to receive their tax refunds more quickly.

In the text message, scammers ask customers to call a certain phone number to straighten out their Emerald Card account.

Gene King, spokesperson for H&R Block says he believes someone got hold of a random list of cell phone numbers because several recipients don’t have Emerald Cards. Because of this, King says the company doesn’t believe its system has been compromised.

H&R Block is warning customers not to reply to any text messages claiming to be from the company.
