Injured NKC Police Dog has Possibly Career-Saving Surgery

NORTH KANSAS CITY, Mo. – A North Kansas City Police dog who was injured after wandering off is now undergoing surgery that veterinarians and officers hope will get him back on the force.

Ty, who spent almost two days wandering the Northland two weeks ago, is undergoing the procedure at the Blue Pearl Veterinary Clinic in Overland Park. Ty jumped out his patrol car in the early morning hours of December 3rd and ran into a wooded area. Almost two days later, he was spotted by the public and picked-up at Waterworks Park.

“At least he’s alive we’re glad to have him back alive,” said Maj. Steven Beamer of the NKCPD last week. “We’re thankful he’s back and not harmed worse than he is or dead.”

But Ty didn’t escape his adventure unharmed. Veterinarians say that he has some cuts and a limp – possibly from tendon or ligament damage.

“It could have been his leg was caught in a fence and during that time to free himself he injured his leg.” said Maj. Beamer.

Veterinarians have said that the surgery will cost around $4,000.
