KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A man was fatally struck by a city bus on Tuesday evening where Interstates 35 and 29 split, closing northbound I-35 for four hours while the Missouri Highway Patrol investigated.
The victim has been identified by MSHP as 40-year-old Charles Turman.
Mark Huffer, KCATA’s General Manager, said that the accident is under investigation.
Witnesses say Turman was walking along the far east shoulder of I-35 and walked into the path of the bus. The bus was headed for Liberty and only one of the 39 riders on the bus needed medical attention, a pregnant woman. Neither she nor her child sustained any injuries.
“Our thoughts are with the victim’s friends and family. Our thoughts are also for the comfort for our driver and our customers who had to witness such a thing,” said Mark Huffer, KCATA’s general manager.
Adding to the tragedy, it was the bus driver’s first day on the job. She is expected to take some time off, according to KCATA.
