TOPEKA, Kan. — Kansas lawmakers will debate whether to drop the state sales tax or keep it at 6.3 percent. The tax is scheduled to drop to 5.7 percent on July 1, which is 0.6 percent.
Some lawmakers want to keep the sales tax as it is and make cuts to the income tax rate instead. Other lawmakers want to keep their promise to voters by dropping it.
“Maybe I am too optimistic, but I truly believe there will be a compromise and it will be somewhere in between the zero and sixth-tenths,” Michael O’Donnell, Wichita Senator, said. “I don’t believe either side is going to get everything they want, but that’s part of good governing.”
Chenay Sloan owns a clothing resale store and she believes people will spend more if the sales tax rate is reduced.
“Even though it might be a few cents or a couple dollars, it really gives consumers the confidence that their dollar is going a little bit further,” said Chenay Sloan.
Lawmakers are expected to debate the issue and come to a decision by mid-week.
