Kansas City community leaders discuss citizens’ public rights

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Three weeks after a police officer in Ferguson shot and killed an unarmed teenager, people here in Kansas City are talking about their rights and what they should do if stopped by an officer.

Kansas City Mayor Sly James, leaders from the police department and several politicians sat on a panel Saturday at St. James United Methodist Church to talk about police policies and laws, and to answer questions.

The town hall meeting tackled the topic, “What do I do when pulled over by police?”

Mayor Sly James said, “We have officers, and I don’t want people to think we don’t, we have officers out there who care. We have officers out there who do the right thing.”

Mayor James was among a panel of ten city leaders, politicians and representatives from the Kansas City Police Department. They offered advice on what to do when an officer stops you.

“It’s always been my habit that I would say as little as possible, give them what information they need, and go on my way,” said Mayor James.

The group also offered suggestions on what to do on your own.

“What I would suggest is that everybody in here takes the time to learn the law,” said State representative Brandon Ellington.

Law, the panel says can be changed through active community members.

“We need you all to give us ideas of what legislation that you find important that you think will make things better,” said State representative Gail McCann Beatty.

Officers also explained some of your rights.

One police major said, “If you don’t like what that officer’s telling you, politely say, may I have a supervisor. It’s no different than the department store, or restaurant. You get something you don’t like, you say may I see your supervisor?”

He also shared a piece of advice that perhaps applies to everyone.

“Treat people like you want to be treated,” he said.
