KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Six months after explosions rocked the Boston Marathon, Kansas City prepares to host its own annual race. Despite the bombings that killed three people and wounded hundreds of others – security hasn’t been dramatically changed.
An estimated 12,000 people will take part in the various races Saturday morning. With the start and finish line in the same spot, all eyes will be fixed on this area as well as every mile in between.
“We’ve done several of these we’re ready for it, just like any other race,” KCPD Captain Mike Wood said.
Captain Wood is confident there won’t be any problems at Saturday’s race, but police are ready just in case.
“We’re always tweeking our plan, Boston, specifically isn’t why we are, but we always look at them. We feel comfortable we have a working plan in place and can handle anything that comes up,” Captain Wood said.
From the second the races begin until the last person crosses the finish line, the eyes of law enforcement will be fixed on the course and the crowd. However, Captain Wood says not every officer will be easy to see.
“Plenty of officers involved. There will be a large number of officers the races participants will never know are there,” Captain Wood said.
The cold fall – almost winter like temperatures – will add another layer of difficulty to the security of the race.
“It will make it a little more difficult but it’s nothing that’s going to cause us any concern, we know people will be bringing extra clothing,” Captain Wood said.
Police are hopeful the thousands of extra eyes either running or watching will also help. If you see anything suspicious, don’t hesitate to say something. While security is a priority, so is the safety of the runners. If you’ll be driving near the route Saturday morning, be prepared for one of those uniformed officers to stop you until the coast is clear.
