KANSAS CITY, Kan. — A Kansas City, Kansas man was shot and killed and friends say his two sons heard it all happen.
It happened overnight during the early morning hours of Saturday, in the 1900 block of North 24th Street. Friends say the fourth and fifth grade boys ran screaming to a neighbor’s house for safety.
“It’s beyond a sad situation because he is one of my best friends. We both look after each other’s children,” Curtis Ross said.
Ross is the godfather to 42-year-old Tracy Williams’ two sons.
Ross says he watched the boys often, while Williams underwent treatment for cancer and said all they could talk about is how much they loved their dad.
“They had the most grooviest times. They really, really enjoyed being with their father,” Ross said.
Ross says the two boys came over a lot, but was surprised when they showed up on his doorstep at 3:00 a.m. Saturday.
“They were very distraught. They were confused, didn’t know why, what happened,” he said.
The boys told Ross a man came to their front door, asking for their father. When Williams came to the door, the boys say the man shot Williams five times at close range. Ross says the boys had to walk past their father’s body and ran screaming to his front porch.
“The boys came knocking on the door crying…I asked them what happened and they said their father got shot. My wife tended to them, and I ran to the house to see what was going on,” said Ross.
When he got to Williams’ home, Ross said he was dead and police were just getting on scene.
Ross says he has no idea who would’ve wanted to kill his best friend but he knows life for his god sons will never be the same.
“They’re very hurt and disturbed about it,” said Ross.
The boy’s mother is in prison, so they are now staying with their aunt according to friends.
