KANSAS CITY, Kan. — Two men are in custody after trying to break into a retired police officer’s home — and their arrest happened in front of FOX 4 cameras. Police said the attempted break-in was part of a vandalism spree that left at least six cars damaged in a Kansas City, Kan., neighborhood early Friday morning.
Police said it appears the vandalism started around 5 a.m. Items like wallets and IDs were stolen from vehicles — many of which were left unlocked by their owners. At least one suspect was spotted by a man near 123rd Street and Leavenworth Road as he was going through car.
A 19-year-old victim who saw the suspects rummaging through his dad’s vehicle was punched in the face when he confronted them. Afterward, the suspects took off on foot, but were later taken into custody when they attempted to break into the home of a retired, 27-year veteran of the Kansas City Kansas Police Department.
“I called [police] and said, ‘This is the whitest guy I’d ever seen,’ said Chuck Householder, retired police officer, describing the suspects.Victims were pleased to know the suspects had been arrested.”Oh, I love it,” said Jill Waltsak. “[They] picked the wrong house, I guess, to mess with.”
“You feel like you’re violated, that’s really the main deal,” said Tom Bargas, whose daughter’s car was broken into. “You don’t want anyone messing with your property, that’s what’s really aggravating. I’m just grateful that they actually caught these guys.”
Police said they are still taking calls from potential victims. The names of the suspects have not been released.
