KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Wednesday is Earth Day, the day we celebrate Mother Earth, but that doesn’t mean environmental awareness has to end after the day is over.
Several dozen city employees suited up in bright T-shirts, and hit the streets on Wednesday with gloves and trash bags, to pick up litter. They split efforts between the Dunbar and Swope Parkway neighborhoods. It’s part of the KC Trash Bash, a way for city workers to show neighbors that they care about how the neighborhoods look and for the mental health of those who live in KCMO.
“The work that you see that would have to go into fixing it up can be depressing, but if the area is clean and nice, it makes a huge difference on your mental health,” said Diana Johnson, who works with the city’s water department.
“Our hope is that those who are driving by and seeing what we’re doing might think twice about just throwing something out of the window of their car,” environmental compliance manager Andy Savastino said.
