Two in hospital with life-threatening injuries following two unrelated KCMO standoffs

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Two people have life-threatening injuries following two unrelated standoffs that happened about a block apart on Monday afternoon. The first was at 41st and Troost and the second was around 42nd and Forest.

The first standoff started when police say they were checking on someone who lived near 41st and Troost. FOX 4 was told the man inside was wanted for questioning in a shooting that happened over the weekend. After several hours, that man surrendered, ending the standoff peacefully and he’s in custody.

Then, just before 3:00 p.m., shots were fired in such close proximity that officers at 41st and Troost could hear them, and some responded to the area at 42nd and Forest.

A police spokesperson said when officers arrived, they saw two people shooting at each other. Police then reportedly approached one of the armed persons and officers fired at them. That started the second standoff.

“After it concluded, officers were attempting to ascertain if there were any other parties in the residence, and in doing so, we wanted to make sure that we were safe and that is why the second standoff was called,” Sergeant Kari Thompson with KCPD said.

In the end, it appeared no one else was in the house. Both people involved in the shootout are in the hospital. FOX 4 was told children live in the house, but they are safe and are with other adults to care for them. Police are still investigating to find out exactly what happened on Forest.
