Lafayette County Jail Escapee Captured in St. Louis

LEXINGTON, Mo. — An inmate who escaped from the Lafayette County Jail is back in custody after being apprehended in the St. Louis area, authorities said on Wednesday.

Tommy F. Haubrich, 39, escaped from the Lafayette County Jail last Saturday evening. According to the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Department, Haubrich apparently broke a lock on a door that gave him access to a crawl space, then the roof through a drain. Authorities suspect that Haubrich had outside help in his escape.

Because of an error by jail personnel during an inmate count, Haubrich was not discovered as missing until Sunday afternoon.

Haubrich was being held in the jail by U.S. Marshals on federal drug charges.

Authorities say that they are investigating the jail staffing and procedures that led to the escape.
