KOSSUTH TOWNSHIP, Maine — Police say a Maine logger helped save an infant in Maine when he crawled into a car that was upside-down in water, used a knife to cut the straps off the car seat and pulled her out.
The accident happened on Monday when Stephen McGouldrick lost control of his SUV on an icy road and rolled the vehicle down an embankment into a pool of water. Police say Leo Moody, of Kingman, crawled into the SUV and freed the baby.
Moody said it was cold and his hands were chilled to the point where he couldn’t feel them while he was cutting the straps, and he “kept telling myself, don’t drop the knife.” Moody usually has a knife on him — typically for peeling an apple or whittling a piece of alder.
The infant was submerged for a short time and was not breathing and unresponsive when pulled free. Another passer-by, Wade Shorey, initiated CPR, resuscitating her. The infant was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center for observation.
McGouldrick and two other passengers suffered minor injuries and were treated and released from a hospital.
