LEE’S SUMMIT, Mo. — The holidays aren’t always easy. Maybe you’re alone, maybe you have too much company. They are especially difficult for a Lee’s Summit family this year.
Jason Bertschy has a rare bladder cancer. It spread quickly and his time is limited. He’s on home Hospice. His wife, Beth, took a leave of absence from her nursing job to take care of him and to spend as much time as possible with him.
“We just take one day at a time, you know he has his good days and bad days,” explained Beth.
Wednesday was one of the good days, Beth and Jason spent it like they do most days, hanging out together with their son, Beckett.
This Thanksgiving, there won’t be a turkey dinner in this house. It’s too much to take on with Jason’s health. But they will celebrate with friends. Beth said she’s met some amazing people since Jason got sick and they’ve helped both of them through some dark times.
Another way Beth lets out her emotion – writing updates on Jason’s Youcaring.com page. It gives her a chance to share how he’s doing, but it’s also a place for her to share her feelings.
Beth’s most recent post is about how she and Jason are approaching the holiday season, which will likely be their last together. Instead of getting caught up in the hustle and bustle, she hopes people will take time to enjoy the time with the people they love.
“I’m being honest about the feelings in my household these days. It’s hard to be excited about the details we relate to the holidays when someone you love is dying,” Beth wrote.
This isn’t a ‘poor me’ post, it’s true, raw emotion. And it ends with a wish.
“Hug each other tight and often! Listen to each other’s stories and laugh as much as you can…while you can.”
No one knows that better than this family and Jason’s praying for just one gift this season.
“I want time, with this family.” said Jason.
It will take a miracle. The Bertschy’s know that. They’re not expecting one, but they’ll keep praying for one and keep spending as much time together as they can. They wish everyone good health and a happy holiday.
