KANSAS CITY, Mo. — After resisting officers for more than three hours on Friday night, Gabriel Ortega-Cobos was taken into police custody and has been charged with four criminal counts on Saturday stemming from a shooting incident.
Ortega-Cobos was charged with first-degree murder, first-degree aggravated assault and two counts of armed criminal action. The shooting happened during the overnight hours on Friday in the 3000 block of East. 12th Street.
According to court documents, witnesses said Ortega-Cobos and the victim, identified as Guillermo Baylon-Olivares, 29, were involved in a “brief altercation” at a bar. Ortega-Cobos was escorted from the bar outside. Witnesses said they saw Ortega-Cobos retrieve a hand gun from his car and re-enter the bar where he started shooting. According to court documents, one witness told police Ortega-Cobos approached the victim, who was attempting to shield himself with a bar stool, and shot him. Witnesses told authorities Ortega-Cobos and Baylon-Olivares were not associated with one another.
Another person at the bar, a Hispanic male, was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries after the shooting inside of a tavern.
Ortega-Cobos evaded KCPD for the majority of Friday but was taken into custody on Friday night after a lengthy standoff at a residence on the 500 block of Cypress Avenue .
