Miley Cyrus’ VMA date wanted by Oregon police

Miley Cyrus’ date to the Video Music Awards on Sunday gained world-wide attention, including some attention the man may not have wanted.

Oregon police say 22-year-old Jesse Helt, a homeless man, is a wanted. They say he was arrested in 2010 for a drug-related burglary attempt, criminal trespass and criminal mischief. Helt received 30 days in jail and probation. Authorities issued a warrant for his arrest a year later, when he violated his parole after he failed to report to his probation officer.

Helt joined Cyrus at the VMAs in an effort to promote My Friend’s Place, a homeless charity Cyrus supports.

Cyrus commented about the matter of Helt being hunted by police on Twitter, saying:

“People who are homeless have lived very hard lives. Jesse included.”

“Does looking down upon the homeless help people excuse their inaction?”

“The media never fails to disappoint. You’ve chosen to go after Jesse instead of covering the issue of youth homelessness :(”

The Director of Community Corrections for Polk County, Ore., said officials are trying to locate Helt to arrest him.
