KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Missouri education officials are increasing their oversight of the Kansas City School District, as well as two other unaccredited school districts in the state.
The Missouri Department of Education said it’s part of their plan to help improve the unaccredited district’s performance. They have hired a “The Cities for Education Entrepreneurship Trust,” a private group to help unaccredited school districts in the state. The Kansas City Missouri School District lost its accreditation in 2012.
The group is expected to come up with a report and recommendations on how the state can step in and help the struggling districts.
At the same time, the board of education has asked its staff to increase oversight of the three unaccredited school districts. On August 28 a new state law goes into effect, giving the department of education more power to step into troubled schools.
The group hired by the board will be paid nearly $400,000 with funding from the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation and the Hall Family Foundation.
