KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Cold weather can be damaging to Missouri roadways, but so can the extreme heat.
When temperatures reach between 90 and 100 degrees, roadways can crack and crumble. It happens when moisture seeps into the pavement — and the pavement expands. Missouri Department of Transportation engineers call it a “pavement blow-up,” and they can happen any time. Crews work to fix them as soon as they’re reported.
“We have minor blow ups, which are kind of just bumps in the road that sometimes they relax when spring and fall come around and temperatures calm down, but a pavement blow up is a larger bump that you definitely notice and the pavement may start to crumble a little bit,” Griffin Smith, MoDOT said.
