Mother Claims Daughter Was Denied Ambulance Service

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The family of a 14-year-old girl claims two medics denied the teenager a ride in an ambulance to the hospital over the weekend.
The mother says she called 911 after her daughter complained of a severe migraine that left part of her body numb.

The medics told the family the daughter was making up a severe migraine. When Felicia Johnson got home Sunday night, her daughter, Lakia was screaming in pain over what she described as a severe migraine. The loss of feeling moved from her legs up into her hands. Johnson’s first thought was to get a medical crew to their home as fast as possible.

“They looked at my baby, touched the bottom of her feet and said it looks like she is faking,” says Felicia Johnson.

Felicia was in shock when the medics refused to transport her daughter to the hospital. Johnson says the EMT told her they didn’t see any difference between you taking her in your car.

So, that’s what the family did. They used a friend’s car to take Lakia to the closest children’s hospital.

“These are people to come to help you here in your home, you called them to get you to better help, they just ignored my baby,” says Johnson.

When they got to the hospital, Felicia felt a sense of relief. She says doctors started treating her daughter for a 103 degree fever and low blood pressure. Then, Johnson’s daughter was taken by ambulance to Children’s Mercy on Gillham where she stayed for almost 24 hours.

Johnson took her concern to the Kansas City Fire Department to file a report against the ambulance crew.

“It happened to my baby with a migraine I don’t want it to happen to someone with a heart attack,” she said.

FOX 4 contacted the Kansas City Fire Department. They told us they are looking into the allegations. We also learned, it up to the discretion of the medics on whether or not to transport anyone to the hospital.
