Neighboring bar owner weighs in on body found under crashed van

KANSAS CITY, Kan. — Kansas City, Kansas police are trying to figure out how a man ended up dead, underneath a van that crashed into an area business.

Around 7:30 Tuesday morning, workers at Calvert’s Express Auto Service found a van smashed into the back of their building and what police found when they moved the van was even more concerning.

“When you’ve been involved in any kind of tragedy and you have something like that happen, this close to a business it’s unsettling,” said Dan Pratt, who owns To The Hoop Sports Bar and Grill next door to the auto shop, where the deadly crash happened.

“It’s really hard to get ahold of because your expectation is to never find anything like that,” Pratt said.

Police went to 79th and State Avenue when workers arrived this morning and called them about the smashed van.

“Our bartenders have indicated that they do recognize the vehicle,” added Pratt.

The van was totaled and partially in the building.

“At first just treating it as an accident, didn’t see anybody around. As we began to pull the car away from the building, we found a white male deceased underneath the vehicle,” said Officer Tomasic with the KCK Police Department.

He says no one was in the car when they arrived.

Police do not know who was driving the van at this time. They have been looking at surveillance video from area businesses. If you have any information that might help out police, please call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS.
