Nun gives birth, says she was ‘unaware’ of pregnancy

RIETI, Italy — A nun, who was rushed to the hospital with stomach pains, ended up giving birth to a baby boy.

A 31-year-old nun, belonging to the ‘Little Disciples of Jesus’ convent near Rieti, Italy, gave birth to a 7.7 pound baby this past Wednesday.

The woman, whose name has not been released, had been rushed to an area hospital complaining of stomach pain; only to find out she was in labor and about to give birth.

“I did not know I was pregnant. I only felt a stomach pain,” she said to an Italian news agency, according to the Huffington Post.

The nun, who is originally from El Salvador, named her baby Francesco (Francis) after the pope. The name is one of the most popular names in Italy.

Other new mothers at the hospital where the woman gave birth have been collecting clothing and donations for her.

The report said the woman’s fellow nuns were quoted as saying they were “very surprised” in regards to the child’s birth. According to the Daily Mail, the woman plans on keeping the child.
