Shawnee Police Officer Delivers Baby in Car

SHAWNEE, Kan. — Born on the side of the road – that’s Briggs Pierce’s story for the rest of his life.

The healthy baby boy was born Monday, Jan. 23, on the side of Shawnee Mission Parkway inside his parents’ car.

The couple had reportedly ran a red light. That’s when Shawnee Police Officer Nate Karlin followed suit and pulled them over. To his surprise he found a female passenger in labor.

The driver (and father) was so overwhelmed he didn’t leave the driver’s seat. Karlin called for an ambulance, but little baby Briggs was bound and determined to be born in the car.

Karlin acted quickly, wrapping the baby in a shirt before an ambulance transported the baby and mother to Shawnee Mission Medical Center in good condition.
