Olathe Church Gives Away $10,000 in Gas Friday Morning

OLATHE, Kan. — A long line of cars formed at the Quik Trip gas station at 135th and Blackfoot, after a local church decided it wanted to help their community and pay for people to fill their gas tanks.

The church congregation knew they wanted to make an impact on the community and quickly donated $10,000 to make it happen.

Pastor Jon Purkey of Nexus Church, along with many from the church stood back and watched the smiles and greeted people. Wearing a shirt with a grenade and a heart on it, FOX 4’s Kathy Quinn asked him what it meant.

“A grenade is a destructive thing, but when you add a heart to it, it’s throwing love bombs and blessing people and that’s kinda what it’s all about,” Purkey said.

Those who waited in the long line did so because they knew it would help their budget.

“I work nights and it just helps out,” said one recipient. “I go see my mom on the weekends so it helps out there, too,” he said.

The Olathe Police Department helped manage the traffic during the gas rush.
