WARRENSBURG, Mo. — How’s this for a first-hand civics lesson?
An elementary school student from Overland Park applied for the position of city planner for the city of Warrensburg, after seeing it on FOX 4 News.
Low and behold, she got the job!
Kim Glackin said it all began when her daughter, Gillian sent in a letter applying for the job as city planner with the City of Warrensburg. Kim said the family didn’t expect a reply, since her daughter is only eight years old.
However, when a reply in the mailbox surprised them, it sent Gillian to one memorable day on the job.
Members of the city took notice, and decided to give Gillian the job for the day.
And the little girl from Overland Park spent the entire day soaking up every detail of the job.
Gillian said she applied for the job, “cause it looked like fun.”
She spends most of her days in second grade classes at Oak Park Carpenter Elementary School, but she spent this Friday inspecting houses and signing important city documents. Her mom said the family couldn’t be more thankful for the experience.
“She has a wonderful teacher and a fabulous community of friends,” Kim Glackin said. “They were all just ecstatic for her that she was going to have this opportunity.”
Barbara Carroll, Director of Community Development for the city of Warrensburg, helped set up this day-long civics lesson for this bright young student.
“It’s nice to make an impression on a small child that working for a city can be interesting, and that every day is different,” Carroll said.
Gillian must already be in planning for her first construction project. She told me she asked Santa Claus for dynamite for Christmas. Whether or not she receives it, she has a great story tell her classmates when school is back in session in early January.
Carroll says the city is still searching for a permanent city planner.
