Overland Park’s 9-11 memorial to honor victims 13 years later

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — To coincide with the 13th anniversary of the September 11th attacks, the city of Overland Park unveils its third and final phase of its  9-11 memorial, known as the “Weeping Wall.”

A somber day of reflection and reverence is on tap at the Overland Park Fire Training Center. Public safety and military officials will honor the fallen and their families of the fateful day that changed America.

The weeping wall is a water feature made of eroded metal panels, with water flowing over.. Representing tears shed on the day nearly 3,000 people were killed.

Two granite floor tiles from the World Trade Center will be embedded in the walkway leading to the memorial. Two panels show gratitude to individuals and companies for their support of the privately funded memorial.

Thursday’s events include:

7:00 a.m. Dedication
7:30-9:30 a.m. Memorial ceremony
fire and police honor guards will clear the memorial, strike a bell and place flowers at sentinel times during the morning. People are free to experience the memorial between these events.
