OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — As the number of confirmed measles cases continues to grow, so does the debate over whether people should be vaccinated.
Parents have started asking if schools should do more to protect students from a possible outbreak in the area.
“It’s one of those things you think gosh the kids all have to have it, why aren’t they applying that to the teachers,” mother Emily Gretzinger said.
Teachers and school staff in Kansas and Missouri currently are not required to show proof of vaccination. Teachers in the Blue Valley school district are only required to show proof of a TB test.
FOX 4’s Katie Ferrell said she reached out to six school districts but only heard back from three including Blue Valley, Lee’s Summit and Kansas City Public Schools.
“Our district staff are not required to show proof of measles immunization, and we do not have a policy related to this. Our student immunization policies are in accordance with law,” a Lee’s Summit school district spokesperson said.
Kansas City Public Schools also added that they do not require proof of vaccines.
No cases of measles have been reported in the metro, but cases are getting closer.
