PARKVILLE, Mo. — People who live in the Northland now have a new place where they can enjoy time outside. Platte County Parks and Recreation and the City of Parkville unveiled Platte Landing Park on Saturday. The project cost more than $2 million, and some parts of it took several years to plan.
Jason Croghan and his family spent Saturday morning at a brand new place in Parkville.
“It’s just good to stay active. Something like this allows us to come out with the kids, the dog, and just kind of be active with the whole family,” he said.
Platte County Parks and Recreation Director Brian Nowotny said, “We are a rapidly growing county and we have great areas of development around 152 and Zona Rosa, but it’s really nice that we can also save some of this green space at the same time for future generations to be able to enjoy.”
Platte County Parks and Recreation says part of the planning for this green space included what to do when it floods.
“We have no doubt the floodwaters are coming, but when they do, we’re going to be able to recover in as quickly amount of time as possible,” said Nowotny.
The new park was planned to compliment nearby English Landing Park. It has a walking trail, the only boat ramp on the Missouri side between downtown Kansas City and St. Joseph, and a dog park.
“This is Platte County’s first dog park to be built countywide so we’re thrilled to be opening it today for the public,” said Nowatny.
“We’ve seen them in downtown Johnson County, that sort of thing, but it was definitely something that was missing in the Northland so we’re glad to see Parkville finally got one and we’ll be using it a lot,” said Croghan.
